On the 105th anniversary of the opening of the TBMM(Turkish Grand National Assembly 23.04.1920), we remember with mercy, respect and gratitude the Commander-in-Chief of our War of Independence, the Founder of our Republic, the GREAT STATESMAN who devoted his life to the welfare and happiness of the nation, Ghazi Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK, and his comrades-in-arms. (23.04.2025)

DON'T INVOLVE THEM IN THIS, ATATÜRK!

Mr. Vasfi Aksu narrates. Third General Inspector Tahsin Uzer had organized a meeting at the Trabzon Atatürk Mansion for the first anniversary of Atatürk’s death. We asked him for a memory of Atatürk. He accepted and told it, he said;

“…One of the things Atatürk liked the most was talking to Mehmetçik (Turkish soldiers). On his last visit to Trabzon, one morning we were leaving the gate of this mansion. I had passed in front of them without realizing it, and I think I had gone out before, a little bit by squeezing them. When he saw my sudden surprise:

⁃ Wait Tahsin... See what will happen!... he said. He approached the private who was standing guard at the gate and asked:

- What is your name!...

- Mehmet, Atatürk.

- Tell me, Mehmet (point to me) is this the greatest or am I the greatest…

- You are the greatest!...

- Is there no one greater than me?...

- There is none, Atatürk.

- Think carefully, Mehmet. Is there no one greater than me?...

The answer of the soldier is definite, his voice is louder than time:

⁃ There is none, Atatürk!..

Ataturk's facial features suddenly tighten. As when he gets very nervous, one of his cheeks starts to twitch. He fixes those unbearable gazes on the soldier's eyes and, holding his shoulder with his hand, asks again:

⁃ Okay. What about the Prophet, or God?... Mehmet, aren't they greater than me too?...

In the face of this question that surprises us all, the upright Mehmet's neck bends and he answers in a pleading, respectful voice:

- Don't involve them in this, Atatürk!...

Atatürk's tense facial features soften, he embraces the soldier and kisses his forehead. He turns to us and says,

-Which one of us could have solved this situation with such a brilliant answer? Here lies the raw but unmatched intelligence of the Turkish soldier...

We were in awe and Atatürk was as happy as if he had won a new victory..."
